CPL7075 is a CB1/CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonist, with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties targeted at neuropathic and inflammatory pain, and inflammation. The markets that these conditions represent, have less than effective drugs with significant side effects, and annual sales in excess of several billions of dollars.
CPL7075 is an oral drug candidate, first in class, that may represent a much safer and tolerable, as well as novel efficacious treatment for neuropathic and inflammatory pain as well as inflammation. The compound was designed and selected on the basis of systematic research into the structure-activity relationship of cannabinoids, including specific substitution groups, side-chain and stereochemistry, to eliminate psychoactivity, while retaining the ability to signal the Cannabinoid (CB) receptors affecting pain and inflammation.
Unlike current treatment options for these indications, it has demonstrated the potential to be much safer, as well as provide a significant analgesic effect to a broader group of responding patients.
CPL7075 has undergone an extensive pre clinical toxicology and pharmacology battery of studies, completed by the prior licensors of the molecule, as well as independent research groups in academia and industry. The molecule has also completed a single dose safety study and a Phase 2a proof of concept study. The Phase 2a study included two extensive inventories of cognitive impairment, which were negative and the study was statistically significant despite the small number of patients in a crossover design.
The molecule is currently completing manufacturing and pre-clinical studies in preparation for Phase I studies. After completion of the Phase I studies, Cervelo plans to complete a Phase 2b study in Post Herpetic Neuralgia patients.
